Ocean Systems Service Offerings

  Vessel / Simulation Study

TOWSIM is a service offered jointly by OSI and Oceanweather (OWI), the creator of a hindcast database depicting global wind and wave conditions every 6 hours. This unique data base on 100+ CDs re-creates the wind and wave climate spanning the past 30+ years. When coupled with OSI's ship routing software, it allows repeated simulation of voyages as if they happened in the past.  This capability allows applications such as:
  • Establishing METOCEAN design criteria for towing of offshore structures
  • Estimating transit times for a new vessel/deployment of a liner shipping company
  • Investigate the effect of sea margin and motion response characteristics on ship performances
  • Unbiased Seastate/Beaufort number determination on past voyages for charter party disputes or insurance claims
  • Estimating fuel consumption for voyage charters

A list of key statistics provided by TOWSIM include:

  • Monthly cumulative probability and probability density functions of Voyage maximum of : Significant Wave Height, Wind Speed, Vessel Motion and voyage Duration.
  • Monthly joint probability density functions of : Sig Wave Height vs Peak Period, Hs vs Wind Speed, Roll vs Pitch, Hs vs Tp for 8 sectors of relative heading to waves.
  • Long-Term prediction of extreme wave height vs number of wave cycles.
